Overlander Discover 2.0 Roof Top Tent 1.6x2.1 M

Pitching a tent in the dark, in the rain, after twelve hours of driving is the moment most people start regretting a ground tent. A hardshell with hydraulic struts removes that problem entirely: release the latches, lift the lid and the bed is ready.

Discover 2.0 is a hardshell roof top tent in an ABS case with a 160 x 210 cm sleeping area, a glazed Sky Roof panel and a mattress that stays inside. Folded, it stands just 30 cm tall, so it behaves predictably on the roof while you drive.

Weight

Key benefits

  • Rigid ABS shell with hydraulic telescopic strut — the tent opens in one movement, and the closed case protects the fabric in transit while stabilising the whole assembly in use.
  • 600D Oxford polyester at 260 g — a heavier cloth than in hiking tents, with increased tear resistance and retained breathability.
  • PU coating rated 2000 mm+ — keeps water out in rain as well as in high ambient humidity.
  • 420D rainfly with anti-UV 50+ coating — protects not only against water but against sun degradation of the fabric.
  • PVC roof window (Sky Roof) — daylight inside during the day, a view of the sky after dark.
  • Side windows with insect mesh — ventilate without letting bugs in, which also cuts down condensation.
  • 30 mm high-density mattress — the removable cotton cover can be washed, so the tent stays clean through the season.
  • Aluminium alloy base — folding, light and stiff at once, meaning less roof load than a steel structure.
  • SBS zippers — large sliders that take daily opening and closing.

Who it is for — solo travellers and pairs who move camp almost every day. In that pattern of travel the difference between a hardshell and a fabric fold-out is obvious immediately: setting up and packing down takes moments, and the mattress stays inside with the bedding. A 30 cm closed height and a 160 x 115 cm footprint make for a compact package on the roof; before fitting, check the permitted roof and rack load of your vehicle, because the tent alone weighs 70.5 kg.

Fitting / notes

The tent mounts on crossbars or a roof rack with adequate load capacity, and it pays to settle the choice of mounts and the roof load calculation before buying. Our workshop specifies and fits overlanding equipment day to day, so we can help match a solution to your specific vehicle. Note that the manufacturer photographs show the 2.1 x 2.1 m version of the Overlander Discover fitted to the car, not the 1.6 x 2.1 m variant described here.

Why it is worth it

  • An ABS shell on a hydraulic strut is the fastest way to make camp, which is real time saved when you drive every day.
  • 600D/260 g fabric with PU 2000 mm+ plus a 420D anti-UV 50+ rainfly is a coherent package for long seasons of sun and rain.
  • The 1.6 x 2.1 m variant is lighter and narrower than the 2.1 x 2.1 m model, which matters on vehicles with a lower permitted roof load.

If you want a tent that will not put you off making camp after dark, this variant is a solid starting point, and we can help you choose the right mounting for your roof.
